Reiki 101
Reiki, a Japanese term made up of two smaller words: "Rei" meaning
"universal or spiritually guided" and "ki" meaning "life force energy", is a
very gentle, subtle and calming energy therapy appropriate for treating a
variety of symptoms and issues. Think of it as "energetic Valium." It can
reduce stress and anxiety while increasing feelings of peace and
well-being, without the addiction dangers of a tranquilizing drug. Reiki is
much more than a simple tranquilizer because it addresses the whole
person: body, mind and spirit. Symptoms of physical discomfort are
often eased as a result of its energy-balancing effects. Reiki treatments
may foster creative insights and attitude changes, in addition to
enhancing and/or promoting the healing of emotional issues. Many
clients report feeling very loved or being "held in love" during sessions.
Each client has her own unique experience with Reiki and each Reiki
session that a particular client has will be its own unique experience as
well. The universal, spiritually guided energy is what empowers the client
to balance his/her own energy field and facilitate healing on physical,
mental, emotional or spiritual levels.
Reiki as a healing system was re-discovered and developed by
spiritual seeker, Makao Usui, in 1922 in Japan. Reiki, the energy, is
timeless and has been referenced in 2500 year-old sutras.
According to James L. Oschman, PhD and author of Energy
Medicine, living tissues are made up of semiconductor materials and
they form sophisticated electronic circuits. A practitioner's hands emit
measurable ELF (extremely low frequency) electro-magnetic signals that
can induce current flows in the tissues and cells of the recipient.
Oschman contends that energy therapies such as Reiki work by opening
up the channels that enable cells in the body to communicate with each
other, and opening up the terrain so cells can migrate to where they are
needed to initiate repair.
A certified practitioner receives training and an attunement from a
certified Reiki Master Teacher. During the attunement, the teacher uses
an energy transmission process to open the student practitioner up to a
greater flow of energy. There are four levels of training and attunements
with Reiki Master Teacher being the fourth and highest level. I hold a
level III master practitioner certificate and have received additional
training and attunements.
